What Exactly Is Acne?
Acne is a common and often stubborn skin condition that many people face at some point in their lives. It occurs when the hair follicles beneath the surface of the skin become blocked, leading to inflammation and visible breakouts.

Why Does Acne Happen?
The main culprits behind clogged pores include:

  • Overproduction of sebum (the skin’s natural oil)
  • Accumulation of dead skin cells
  • Bacterial growth inside the pores

Acne is very common among teens (roughly 85% experience the condition) as well as among adults (55%), especially among female adults. It is one of the top skin concerns we hear about from our patients.

What Increases the Risk of Developing Acne?
Several underlying factors can influence your chances of developing acne:

  • Hormonal fluctuations
  • Family history
  • Certain medications
  • Age

While stress, specific foods, skincare products, and environmental factors don’t directly cause acne, they can make existing acne worse.

Understanding Pimples and Acne
When pores get blocked with oil, bacteria, or dead skin, the skin reacts by forming blemishes that can vary in type and severity. If not addressed properly, this can lead to painful inflammation or more severe forms of acne, such as cysts.
